Michael Fassbender has joined the cast of '12 Years a Slave'.

The actor will re-team with director Steve McQueen for the third time when he appears in the film, a true story about a New Yorker named Solomon Northrup who was kidnapped from Washington in 1841 and shipped off to become a forced labourer before being rescued from a Louisiana cotton plantation in 1853.

It is not yet clear who Michael - who has previously worked with the filmmaker on 'Hunger' and 'Shame' - will play in the film.

'12 Years A Slave' has been written by the director and John Ridley, and is currently locking down financing.

Shooting on the project is expected to begin early next year.

Michael has previously spoken of how Steve brings out the best in his acting skills.

He has said: "It's like you're on the ice rink skirting along the edges holding on, then a six year old flies past and it encourages you. Steve is like that six year old, because he lets you go for it. 'What's the worst that can happen?' And you know, you might fall a few times, but it's much more fun in the middle that skirting around the edges."
