James Franco is optioning 'The Adderall Diaries: A Memoir of Moods, Masochism and Murder'.

The '127 Hours' actor has gained the novel by Stephen Elliott with a plan to direct and star in movie, about a writer suffering from block taking himself to a murder trial to kick-start his work.

The real-life tale sees Stephen - who was a user of methamphetamine Adderall - report on the trial of Hans Reiser, a computer programmer who is charged with killing his wife, while also delving into the his own thoughts about Paris Hilton and his damaged childhood.

Franco will work on the movie with his production company Rabbit Bandini, Deadline.com reports.

It will not be the first time the 'Milk' star will work behind the camera - he recently created a documentary about the happenings behind the scenes at 'Saturday Night Live' entitled 'Saturday Night'.

Franco, 32, is currently doing promotion for Danny Boyle's '127 Hours', the true-life story of climber Aron Ralston who cut off his own arm to free himself from under a rock, before appearing in 'Your Highness' alongside Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel.
