Box Office Preview! What's New This Weekend?

"The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" arrived in theaters on Wednesday, August 21. Clary has always assumed that she is an ordinary teenager, growing up in New York. But when she starts seeing things nobody else can, Clary has no choice but to get in touch with her true origins. As a Shadowhunter, Clary might play an important role in saving the world. The PG-13 rating is due to suggestive content and intense sequences of fantasy action and violence. Harald Zwart directs.

"The World's End" arrives in theaters on Friday, August 23. The much-anticipated sci-fi comedy from Edgar Wright tells the tale of five friends that are haunted by a failed quest. Twenty years later, the buddies decide to try again to complete a legendary pub crawl. But their plans are interrupted once more, this time by the impending end of the world. The film's R rating is due to pervasive language, including mature references.

"You're Next" is a gory horror film about a family reunion gone horribly wrong. The Davisons have gathered together to catch up and reconnect, but a group of homicidal strangers put a damper on the weekend. With their home under attack and no clear means of escape, the Davison clan struggles to survive the brutal onslaught. Adam Wingard's horror movie has an R rating for some mature content and nudity, language, and strong bloody violence.

"Drinking Buddies" debuts in select theaters on August 23. When Luke and Kate are at work together, their friendship and casual flirtations make the days go by a little quicker. But outside the confines of their brewery jobs, both the friends have relationships that are in danger of slipping away. Kate and Luke have to face up to the deeper implications of their flirting. The comedy has an R rating for pervasive language. Joe Swanberg directs.

"Short Term 12" stars Brie Larson as Grace, a young woman who takes her job very seriously. Grace supervises a foster care facility, trying to keep order among troubled kids. As she tries to be there for children and teens that don't have anybody else, Grace realizes that she also needs to look out for herself. Destin Cretton's drama has an R rating for brief mature content and for language.

"Scenic Route" focuses on the devolving friendship between two men. After their pickup breaks down in a hostile stretch of desert, Mitchell and Carter have nobody to turn to but each other. When tensions reach a boiling point, the two friends make decisions they can never walk away from. The R rating is due to language, mature content, and some violence. Kevin Goetz and Michael Goetz direct.

"Lee Daniels' The Butler" stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a man who works as a butler in the White House. Although he has an insider's perspective on many of the important events that form the United States, Cecil avoids making waves. His son, Louis, is an activist, leading to tensions within Cecil's community. Violence, disturbing content, language, mature content, thematic elements, and smoking contribute to a PG-13 rating. Lee Daniels directs.

"We're the Millers" stars Jason Sudeikis as David, a man with a predicament. He needs a family to deflect attention away from his drug-smuggling activities. Fortunately for David, he finds a group of misfits who are willing to pose as his wholesome family. But under stress, the fake family develops some very real problems. The R rating is due to crude and mature content, drug material, and brief graphic nudity. Rawson Marshall Thurber directs.

"Elysium" predicts a grim future for the human race. With the very wealthy dwelling on a luxurious and high-tech space station, the lower classes have to struggle and fight for a meager existence. When a man realizes that he must either infiltrate Elysium or die, he decides to make a break for it. Neill Blomkamp directs. "Elysium" has an R rating for strong violence and language.

"Planes" is an animated film from Klay Hall. Dusty is a crop-duster with a big fear of heights, but a strong drive to become a racer. Skipper is a veteran plane with a grouchy attitude. When the two come to an agreement, they both have a lot to learn about perseverance and facing fears. Rude humor and mild action contribute to the PG rating.

In "Kick-Ass 2," Dave and Mindy are trying to find a balance between their superhero callings and their future plans. With Hit Girl in trouble, Kick-Ass decides to team up with a roving group of vigilantes. But a new and merciless villain is ready to put an end to their bold deeds. Jeff Wadlow directs. The action movie has an R rating for pervasive language, strong violence, crude and mature content, and brief nudity.
