Box Office Recap: What Happened over the Weekend?

"Out of the Furnace" saw profits of $5,300,000 during the slower weekend following Thanksgiving weekend. When Rodney returns from Iraq, he doesn't have a bright future ahead of him. Life in the Rust Belt is grim and often unforgiving. Desperate to make some money, Rodney becomes a pawn in a ruthless crime ring. His older brother, Russell, might have to make tough sacrifices. The R rating is due to language, drug content, and strong violence.

Continuing Films

"Frozen" was top at the box office during the weekend of December 6, thanks to box office profits of $31,641,000. Overall, Disney's animated fairytale has earned over $134 million. In the kingdom of Arendelle, two sisters grow up together as princesses. One sister has a mysterious power that creates a rift between Elsa and Anna. After Elsa vanishes and a curious spell alters the entire kingdom, Anna sets out to reunite with her lost sister and change Arendelle's fate. The PG rating is because of mild rude humor and some action.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" earned $27,000,000. In all, the sci-fi action flick has earned over $336 million. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark visit the various Districts during their Victory Tour, but their actual victory seems less and less certain. The 75th Annual Hunger Games are swiftly approaching, and the Capitol is devising new ways to commemorate the occasion. Katniss and Peeta are not through fighting yet. The PG-13 rating is due to frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation, language, and intense violence and action.

"Thor: The Dark World" brought in $4,740,000, meaning that the superhero movie has earned over $193 million in total. While investigating strange phenomena, Dr. Jane Foster stumbles across an otherworldly force that could destroy the entire universe. With her life and everything she loves in grave danger, Dr. Foster will have to rely on Thor and the other Asgardians to defeat the Dark Elves and save the world. The movie's PG-13 rating is due to intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence and some suggestive content.

"Delivery Man" has brought in $24,799,782 in box office profits, including $3,775,000 during the weekend of December 6. Underachieving David earned a little extra cash when he was younger by making anonymous donations to a sperm bank. Many years have passed, and David's life has been going nowhere fast. The same isn't true of the hundreds of total strangers who learn they have David as a biological father. "Delivery Man" has a PG-13 rating for mature content, thematic elements, brief violence, drug material, and language.

Thanks to profits of $3,384,000, "Homefront" surpassed the $15 million mark. Featuring a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone, the action movie follows Phil, a DEA agent who seeks refuge in a small town. When Phil clashes with local meth dealers, he refuses to give into their intimidation tactics. Instead, he'll fight to make a safe home for his young daughter. "Homefront" has an R rating for drug content, language, strong violence, and some mature content.

"The Book Thief" brought in $2,700,000. War breaks out in Germany in the late 1930s, devastating thousands of lives. In the middle of the heartbreak and death, a young girl struggles to hold on to a sense of hope. Reading books brings her comfort, leading Liesel to begin a habit of borrowing contraband books. In total, the moving drama has earned over $12 million. The film's PG-13 rating is due to violence and intense depictions of thematic content.

Movies to DVD

"Despicable Me 2" arrives out on DVD on Tuesday, December 10. Gru has mostly left his villainous days behind him. Now, he's much more interested in being a good dad to his three adopted daughters. Fate has other ideas in store, however. Soon, a representative from the Anti-Villain League is asking Gru for his invaluable help saving the world. The family-friendly movie has a PG rating for rude humor and mild action.

In "Fast & Furious 6," the old crew has scattered across the globe, their racing days behind them. The catch is that they cannot return home to the United States. When a Diplomatic Security Services agent approaches Dom and proposes a tempting deal, the friends could either regain their freedoms or lose everything. The movie has a PG-13 rating for intense sequences of action, violence, and mayhem, as well as for language and mature content.

"Touchy Feely" follows a brother and sister who switch places in life. While Abby is a massage therapist with a warm attitude towards her clients, her dentist brother, Paul, is anything but free-spirited. When Paul develops the gift of a healing touch and Abby starts to hate physical contact, their businesses and lives change in big ways. Drug use, mature content, and language contribute to the R rating.
