Box Office Recap: What Happened over the Weekend?

-- "Oz the Great and Powerful" enjoyed truly great and powerful box office profits during the weekend of March 8, earning an impressive $80,278,000. James Franco stars as Oscar, a circus magician who ends up swept away to a land beyond imagination. At first, Oscar tries to get away with using his magic tricks to fool the locals. Soon, however, he realizes that the Land of Oz may be in very real danger, and it is up to him to help. The PG rating is due to brief mild language, scary images, and action sequences.

"Dead Man Down" brought in $5,350,000 during its first weekend in theaters. Beatrice is a young woman with a lot of anger. When she meets a man, Victor, who is just as vengeful as she is, Beatrice decides to enlist his help, whether he wants to come to her aid or not. If they are not careful, their vengefulness may spell downfall for both Beatrice and Victor. The film has an R rating for mature content, language, and violence.

"Jack the Giant Slayer" earned $10,200,000 during the weekend of March 8, bringing overall earnings to over $43 million. When a farmhand named Jack becomes part of a daring plot, his ordinary life is suddenly populated by angry giants and a beautiful princess. If Jack can save the kingdom, his life might never be the same again. At the same time, he may not survive. The PG-13 rating is due to intense fantasy action violence, brief language, and frightening images.

"Identity Thief" continued to perform well, adding $6,319,000 to its overall profits of more than $116 million. After Sandy Patterson becomes the target of a wily identity thief, he decides to go after the criminal. At first, she seems like an easy opponent. Soon, however, Sandy is in for a wild ride. "Identity Thief" has an R rating for language and mature content.

"Snitch" brought in $5,100,000 during the weekend. Overall, the film has earned more than $31 million. A young man ends up behind bars for a crime that he swears he did not commit. His estranged father listens to his son and decides to believe him. The only way to prove the young man's innocence is to take some very dangerous risks, but his father is up to the challenge. The movie has a PG-13 rating for violence and drug content.

"21 & Over" earned $5,056,000, bringing profits to more than $16 million. Jeff Chang has a predicament. Two of the biggest events of his life happen to fall right at the same time of year. His twenty-first birthday coincides with a demanding med school interview that could change everything. When Jeff has trouble deciding whether to celebrate or study, his friends make the decision for him. The raunchy comedy has an R rating for crude mature content, language, drug use, drinking, and graphic nudity.

"Safe Haven" saw profits of $3,800,000. In total, the heartfelt drama has brought in more than $62 million. Alex, a widower with young children, meets Katie, a beautiful and mysterious young woman who just moved into Alex's small, quiet town. As a bond begins to form between the two, Alex and Katie seem destined for true love. However, Katie has not been totally honest about her dangerous past. "Safe Haven" has a PG-13 rating for violence, language, and thematic elements that involve threatening behavior.

"Life of Pi" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, March 12. During an ocean voyage, Pi Patel survives a terrible accident. Now, though, he is in for the struggle of his life, since he shares his small lifeboat with an assortment of escaped zoo animals. Pi must survive the elements and maintain peace between the increasingly hostile animals, all while hoping for a rescue that may never come. The PG rating is for peril, scary action sequences, and emotional thematic content.

"Rise of the Guardians" is a family-friendly animated film that brings legends to life. Jack Frost is mischievous and wild, preferring to spend his time having fun. The Guardians come to Jack for help, giving him a chance to save human children from an ominous threat. Jack will have to rise to the challenge if he wants to be a hero. The PG rating is due to thematic elements and mildly scary action.

"Hitchcock" comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray on March 12. Anthony Hopkins stars as Alfred Hitchcock, one of the most celebrated filmmakers of all time. The film follows Hitchcock during the peak of his career, as he is working to create "Psycho" (1960) and navigate his tense relationship with his wife, Alma, at the same time. The biopic has an R rating for violent images, thematic materials, and mature content.
