Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

-- "Premium Rush" landed among the top 10 earners at the box office. During the weekend of Friday, August 24th, the film earned $5,900,000, securing eighth place. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a bike messenger who lives in Manhattan. When he accepts a job that includes a mysterious envelope, it does not take long for the messenger to notice that someone is following him. He winds up trying to stay one step ahead of a corrupt police office and a complicated scheme. "Premium Rush" is rated PG-13 for language, violence and intense action sequences.

"Hit and Run" earned $4,200,000 during the weekend. Since its opening on Wednesday, August 22nd, the film has earned $5,393,000. When Annie receives an amazing job offer, she jumps at the chance. The only problem is that her boyfriend used to work as a getaway driver. Now, he has to rely on the Witness Protection Program to stay safe from his vengeful former gang members. With Annie's persuasion, though, the couple recklessly sets off on the open road. Before long, they have unwanted company. "Hit and Run" has an R rating for pervasive language and crude references, violence, drug content and graphic nudity.

Continuing Films

"The Expendables 2" was in top place at the box office this weekend. When Mr. Church directs the ruthless mercenaries towards a lucrative job, everyone is eager for the generous paycheck. However, when a young member of the team winds up dead, the mercenaries embark on a personal quest for bloody revenge. "The Expendables 2" is rated R due to intense violence throughout.

"The Bourne Legacy" stars Jeremy Renner as Agent Cross, an operative in an elite program controlled by the CIA. When he finds himself fighting against unscrupulous enemies, Agent Cross has an ally in the form of Dr. Shearing, a beautiful scientist who is also trying to escape from corrupt forces. Together, the two may have a shot at starting their lives over. The film's PG-13 rating is due to violence and action scenes.

Kodi Smit-McPhee provides the voice of young Norman Babock in "ParaNorman." Nobody who knows him thinks that Norman is anything special. They also do not believe him when he claims to talk to the dead. When Norman tries to carry out an ancient ritual, things go awry and he soon has a zombie invasion on his hands. With the help of his unusual friends, Norman hopes he can make things right again. The PG movie features thematic elements, rude humor, some language and scary images and action sequences.

"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" is the poignant tale of a young boy who changes the lives of everyone he meets. After a childless couple makes a wish to the universe, they wake up to find a 10-year-old boy who seemingly came from the garden overnight. When the couple decides to adopt the boy as their son, the whole town starts to change in magical ways. The PG rating is due to brief language and thematic elements.

"The Dark Knight Rises" stars Tom Hardy as Bane, an ominous new villain who is threatening the peace of Gotham City. If his aim is to draw Batman out of hiding, however, Bane might regret his decision when the caped crusader finally appears. The movie is rated PG-13 for language, sensuality and intense action and violence.

Movies to DVD

"Battleship" is an action movie based on the classic Hasbro board game. During routine military exercises, a Navy fleet encounters an unexpected threat. If the Navy cannot defeat the aliens and their advanced technology, the whole planet may be in jeopardy. Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna star in the film, due out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, August 28th. The sci-fi flick has a PG-13 rating for scenes of intense violence, action and destruction, as well as some language.

"Think Like a Man" is a romantic comedy based on a bestselling relationship advice book. When a group of women decides to start using some emotional techniques on their partners, the men stage a sneaky rebellion and turn the tables. The PG-13 rating is due to brief drug use, crude humor and mature content.

"The Lucky One" tells the story of a young soldier with an unusual quest. After falling in love with a girl from a photograph, he spends his leave tracking her down. However, after putting his heart on the line, the soldier might have to learn a difficult lesson about destiny. The film's PG rating is due to some violence and mature content.

"Pirates! Band of Misfits" is an energetic animated film about a swashbuckling pirate captain and his bumbling, inept crew, trying unsuccessfully to rule the high seas. The family-friendly film has a PG rating for language, rude humor and some mild action sequences.
