Damian Lewis is to play a puritanical pastor in 'The Silent Storm'.

The 'Homeland' actor will star opposite Andrea Riseborough in the movie, which is set in the westernmost islands of Scotland.

The priest is convinced he is God's true messenger, but he struggles when the local mine closes and most of his congregation move to the mainland, while his relationship with Riseborough's ''sensual, free spirit'' character - who he rescues when she is washed up on the beach - is not healthy, and their problems worsen when a delinquent teenager is sent from Glasgow to live with them.

Lewis explained: ''They have a relationship, but he so adheres to the disciplines of the Christian faith that she suffers and he crushes any life out of her.''

The movie, which will be directed by Corinna McFarlane from her own screenplay, is set in the 1950s.

The actor - who will shoot the movie during a break in 'Homeland' filming in June - told the Daily Mail newspaper: ''Before it becomes apparent that you're in the 20th century, you could very easily be in the early 19th. It's very Ibsen-esque, but I don't think the palate of the film will be granite grey. It's got something that's a bit more uplifting than that.''

'James Bond' producer Barbara Broccoli is backing the film.

She said: ''It's really important to have original, fresh female voices out there, and Corinna's incredibly talented. She has a vision and has something to say, and I want to support that.''
