Naomi Watts has been cast as Princess Diana in 'Caught in Flight'.

The 'J. Edgar' star will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel in the film, which has been written by Stephen Jeffreys.

The Ecosse Films picture tells the story of Diana - who married Prince Charles with whom she had sons William and Harry - in the final two years of her life, focusing on her personal happiness and role as a campaigner and humanitarian, and Naomi admits she is delighted to take on the part.

She said: ''It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.''

Oliver added: ''I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.''

'Caught in Flight' will go into production later this year.
