Quick Hits Movie Review: “Monsters University”

Pixar and Disney have given us their latest family gem in the form of monster collegiate education and the role of the “scarer” in monster terms. The scarer is a monster whose job is to scare the heck out of children and collect their scares inside a tube in order to keep the monster world going. There are plenty of frightening monsters, but none with the heart of the smallest one, Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal). Mike may not be the scariest one there is, but he is determined to get his degree at Monsters University and fulfill his life-long dream of becoming a scarer. With a little help from his friend Sullivan (John Goodman), they show Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren) that they have what it takes to put fear in children all over the world.
This was a very good film. It wasn’t as good as say “UP” or “Wall-E,” but it was very entertaining with a good story and solid characters. The animation was obviously unreal, and all voice actors where perfect for their roles. There is something about Billy Crystal’s voice that just takes me back to my own childhood, probably from movies like “The Princess Bride” and “City Slickers.” We also get to hear the voices of Steve Buscemi as Randy, Mike’s first college roommate, and comedians like Charlie Day from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and Aubrey Plaza from “Parks and Recreation.” They all help to make this movie an enjoyable experience for kids and adults alike. This movie is a great addition to your summertime theater adventures!
