Quick Hits Movie Review: “Epic”

Imagine if you mixed “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” with “The Wizard of Oz” with “Avatar” and you will get the new animated movie from Twentieth Century Fox Animation called “Epic”. This new film follows a young girl named Mary Katherine (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) through a crazy adventure where she gets shrunk (you’ll have to see the movie to see how) and finds herself in a war between the Leafman warriors like Ronin (Colin Farrell) and Nod (Josh Hutcherson), and the the evil Boggans with their leader, Mandrake (Christoph Waltz). Both sides are fighting for a pod left by Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles) because the pod holds the life of the forest. Along the adventure we meet some great characters including a slug named Mub (Aziz Ansari) and a wise caterpillar named Nim Galuu (Steven Tyler), both which add a wonderful comic relief to the film.
“Epic” is not the best animated movie I have seen but it is very good. The story is well constructed and the animation is majestic. I felt that the story behind the Leafman and the Boggans was very much left up to the imagination. I do think they could of spent at least a few minutes describing how they came to be. This is a kids movie though and judging by the kids in the audience, they all seemed entertained. This story is for both boys and girls and has pretty much everything each of them wants including: queens, prince charming, a lonely girl who finds happiness, warriors, and fun characters. All in all I think this is a great film and should be enjoyed by people all over the world.
Theater vs. Home Release: I’d wait for the video because kids will be enjoying this on their TV for years.
