Quick Hits Movie Review “Last Love”

The latest Michael Caine movie is sure to do one thing... make you very sad. Don’t get me wrong, it is a wonderful film, but you really need to be in the right mood to watch this film.  “Last Love” is about an older man named Matthew Morgan (Caine) who has not gotten over the loss of his wife three years prior. He has been living in Paris, France for years and has cut himself off from his children whom he never became close to in the first place, Miles (Justin Kirk) and Karen (Gillian Anderson). It’s only through meeting a young woman named Pauline (Clémence Poésy) that his world truly finds meaning again.

One thing about the film that some may find good, or bad, about the film is the length. The film runs about 2 hours which I liked because you actually get to know the characters in this film. Sometimes a film like this relies on a scene or two for the audience to get inside the truth behind each person in the film, and it just isn’t enough. Once again though, you do really need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy this movie.

For me, the best performance comes from Clémence Poésy. I think I am just used to Michael Caine being so great that I just expect him to be great, and he was. But I really enjoyed Poésy’s performance and it reminded me of watching Scarlett Johansson in “Lost in Translation”. Every man who watches this film will fall in love with Poésy just like they did for Johansson. She plays a beautiful woman who treats people with kindness and never really asks for anything in return.  Between her and Caine you will see fantastic chemistry woven inside a beautiful story.
