April 7th, Warner Bros. released another in the growing DVD collection of Hanna-Barbara cartoon favorites. Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword is an original feature length movie. The gang of Mystery Inc. takes a trip to Japan and find themselves circling Asia and the Pacific in a treasure hunt, racing against the vengeful Black Samurai and his Ninja warriors to find the legendary Sword of Fate, an ancient blade fabled to possess extraordinary supernatural powers.

Slackers Scooby-Doo and Shaggy have to toughen up to solve the ultimate martial arts mystery. The pair is indoctrinated by an unlikely Sword Master who teaches them Boshido, the Way of the Samurai. Their skills are teste by an unstoppable army of Robot Ninjas. In the process of developing their new talents, they realize loyalty, honor, and courage are the keys to solving the mystery.

The Special Features in the Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword DVD include:

  • Scooby-Doo Dojo!: Take a Kid-Friendly Look at the World of Martial Arts and Learn More About the Samurai Tradition

It continues to be fascinating to watch these classic cartoons of my youth roll out on the DVD release line for new generations of kids to enjoy. While the characters and stories are still interesting and entertaining, it is hard not to notice the somewhat violent action in shows targeted to young children. It is not necessarily intolerable, but this DVD includes some mild animated violence during the Samurai fighting scenes. Otherwise, another nice WB DVD release.
