Sam Mendes is reportedly set to direct the next James Bond film.

The 'Skyfall' director previously ruled himself out of directing the 24th installment in the spy franchise due to his West End musical commitments, but the filmmaker has now reportedly entered secret talks with producers to helm the new feature, according to Deadline.

007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are thought to have agreed to wait until Mendes has finished his theatre commitments before beginning production on the film next year although no official deal has been made.

The director is currently working on a stage adaptation of 'Charlie and the Chocolate' Factory', which is due to hit the West End stage next month and he has next committed to a 'King Lear' production.

Mendes is credited with the success of last year's commercially successful and critically acclaimed Bond movie, 'Skyfall', which saw Daniel Craig play the suave secret agent for a third time.

The film - which also starred Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench and Naomie Harris - grossed $1.1 billion at the global box office and earned two Academy Awards for Best Original Song and Best Sound Editing.

Meanwhile, producers have also reportedly considered a string of top directors including Christopher Nolan, Ang Lee and Nicolas Winding Refn to helm the next film after Mendes ruled himself out of the position in March.
