Benedict Cumberbatch's parents wanted him to be barrister
Benedict Cumberbatch's parents wanted him to be a barrister.
The 37-year-old star admits his father Timothy and mother Wanda - who were both in the acting industry - didn't want him to pursue a career in performance and initially tried to encourage him to get ''grown-up job'' in law, but they soon changed their minds after realising his talent for drama.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: ''They wanted me to do a grown-up job and be a barrister. But I was at university playing Salieri in 'Amadeus' when my dad said to me, 'You're better than I ever was or ever will be. You'll have a good time doing this and I'm, going to support you'.
''It was a huge thing for a man to say to his son and it's one of the reasons I do the best I can to make them proud.''
The 'Star Trek Into Darkness' hunk - who was voted the sexiest movie star worldwide this year in a poll carried out by Empire Online - has struggled to deal with the army of female fans he has gained since rising to fame in 2004.
He explained: ''It's interesting and it's something I'm processing. It's new to me and I'm sure I'll get used to it and find a way of dealing with it. I find it kind of amusing, but I'm flattered by it.''
