From Director Tom Tykwer and Sony Pictures, The International is available on DVD June 9th. The movie stars Clive Owen and Naomi Watts and Interpol agents attempting to uncover the truth behind a high profile bank’s involvement in international arms dealings.
Louis Salinger (Owens) is an idealist who has sometimes gotten in trouble with his agency and other governments because of his approach to catching bad guys at all costs. Eleanor Whitman (Watts) is a bit more conventional family woman, but she gets caught up in the excitement of righteousness when she and Louis follow a trail that begins when a comrade is killed when he gets close to the bank’s secrets.
The more Louis and Eleanor discover about those involved in financing arms dealers around the world, the more they realize that legally responsible methods will not work. They must be willing to track clues around the world, refuse to follow commands from leaders that sometimes have ulterior motives, and risk their lives repeatedly to do what is right. Louis is set on finding the people in charge of the bank, but he knows that other agents have been killed when they learn more than they can handle.
The International is an intense and suspenseful movie with a great duo of lead actors. Owens and Watts are definitely tops in their industry and bring a lot to any movie. Unfortunately, this story is a bit too big for its britches. If you are going to watch, be sure that you have the time and the focus to commit to keeping up with things.
The concept behind the movie is intriguing and the message is poignant. However, there are so many characters and directions involved, that it is quite difficult to always know what is going on. Still, you should be able to manage to get the gyst of the story before all is said and done.
