Tom Hiddleston originally wanted to play Thor.

The actor was initially in the running to play the hammer-wielding hero in 'Thor' before being cast as his evil brother Loki in the superhero franchise.

He told US chat show host Chelsea Handler: ''I auditioned and I swung the hammer but they were always looking for Loki as well, and I think the closer I got, they were like, 'You should play the bad guy'.''

The 32-year-old star admitted he put in a huge amount of effort to land the role of Thor - which eventually went to Chris Hemsworth - working out like crazy to bulk up his body.

Hiddleston said: ''I did less running and more lifting of things for a while. Some would say [it was] insane. But it was really fun, actually. And I've never done anything like that before.

''I basically went from 180 pounds to 198 pounds and I had something like seven percent body fat.''

Hiddleston's portrayal of Thor's bitter nemesis Loki has proved immensely popular with viewers, leading to his return in 'Thor: The Dark World', but fans were left a little disappointed when Tom confirmed he won't be appearing in 'The Avengers' sequel.

However, when Handler asked if Loki may one day have his own stand-alone film, the audience cheered wildly and Hiddleston replied, ''I hope so.''
