Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins in 'The Hobbit'.

The British actor - who had struggled to get deal on the film because of his commitments to TV show 'Sherlock' - has finally signed on to the Peter Jackson project to play the lead role, while a number of other actors are also set to take part.

'Eastenders' hunk Robert Kazinsky, 'Captain America: The First Avenger' star Richard Armitage and 'Being Human' actor Aidan Turner have also signed on to role.

Director Peter Jackson - who is considering moving the project from New Zealand to the UK following problems with acting unions - said Martin was long-wanted for the lead role and he is perfect for the part.

He said: "Despite the various rumours and speculation surrounding this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us.

"There are few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave - exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit."

Discussing the casting of flame-haired 'Eastenders' star Kazinsky, he said: "Rob is an extremely talented young actor with a huge career in front of him. I'm thrilled that he has agreed to take on the role of Fili."

'The Hobbit' is due to begin filming in February 2011.
