Thursday Preview for July 25

"The Wolverine" arrives in theaters on Friday, July 26. Director James Mangold reboots the franchise with an edgy new film. An acquaintance beckons Wolverine to Japan, where the hero feels out of his element. As it turns out, culture shock is the last thing Wolverine needs to worry about. His true struggle will come from dealing with something very close to home: his private demons. The PG-13 rating is due to mature content, language, and intense sci-fi action and violence. 

"The To Do List" stars Aubrey Plaza as Brandy, a high school senior in 1993. Brandy has everything together in terms of academic achievements, but the same is not true of her decidedly dorky social life. So, with characteristic determination, Brandy sets out to cross a whole slew of new experiences off her list before college. The film's R rating is due to pervasive crude and mature content, drug and alcohol use, and language, all involving teens. Maggie Carey directs. 

"Blue Jasmine" is the latest drama from acclaimed director Woody Allen. After her fairytale marriage goes horribly wrong, spoiled Jasmine is in an increasingly fragile and volatile state. She comes to stay with her sister, Ginger, who has worries and insecurities of her own. The two create an uneasy life in Ginger's unassuming San Francisco apartment. As the tensions rise, the sisters' relationship ends up severely tested. Language, mature content, and mature thematic material contribute to a PG-13 rating. 

In "The Time Being," a wealthy man at the end of his life decides to recruit a younger man, Daniel, to help him complete an unconventional project. As Daniel becomes lost in the work and his complex relationship with his benefactor, his personal life starts to come apart at the seams. It is not long before Daniel realizes that something darker could be at play, but he is in too deep. Nenad Cicin-Sain directs. The film is not rated.
"Apartment 1303 3D" opens in theaters on Thursday, July 25. The horror movie centers on Janet, a young woman who feels thrilled to find an apartment of her very own. Even though it is on the thirteenth floor and seems to have some unusual neighbors, Janet is happy to be living independently. However, the apartment already has an unwelcoming resident who hates to share. Michael Taverna directs. The movie has an R rating for mature content, violent content, and language. 

Continuing Films

"The Conjuring" features Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the Warrens, paranormal investigators who respond to a family's desperate cry for help. The Perrons want nothing more than to finally be free of a hostile presence in their old, rambling farmhouse. The Warrens begin to explore the house's history, but the darkness they uncover is so great that it could take everyone down. The R rating is due to intense and disturbing violence and terror. James Wan directs. 

"Despicable Me 2" is a family-friendly animated film from Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. Gru is trying to lead a quiet, respectable life, producing jams and watching over his daughters and his minions. Unfortunately, a new villain is on the loose, and the Anti-Villain League needs Gru's helps to prevent disaster. As Gru becomes more involved in the hunt, he starts to lose sight of the big picture. The movie's PG rating is due to rude humor and mild action.  

"Turbo" features the voice talents of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Paul Giamatti. The life of a garden snail is very slow-paced, but not every snail is content with this lazy lifestyle. Turbo is one of those snails who wish for something greater. His prayers are answered in an unexpected way when Turbo develops superpowers, allowing him to go faster than he ever thought possible. The movie's PG rating is due to thematic elements and mild action. 

"Grown Ups 2" sees Lenny moving his family from Los Angeles to the quieter pace of small-town life. As it turns out, though, the small town holds many surprises. Some of them are pleasant, while others are not so great. As Lenny and his wife and kids adjust to a different landscape, they also learn some hilarious lessons about the nature of family. "Grown Ups 2" has a PG-13 rating for nudity, language, and crude content. Dennis Dugan directs. 

"Red 2" is a comedy thriller from director Dean Parisot. Although he is trying to escape his past, Frank Moses finds that trouble has a way of catching up with him. With the threat of nuclear war looming, Frank reluctantly gathers up his old crew and sets out to save the day once again. The international search for the nuclear device is trickier than anyone expected. The PG-13 rating is due to action, violence, frenetic gunplay, language, and drug material.
