Weekend Recap: What Happened at the Box Office?

"The Wolverine" was a success at the box office during the weekend of July 26. Profits of $55 million brought the film to first place in box office rankings. When a figure from his past beckons Wolverine to Japan, the enigmatic hero finds himself caught in a struggle between outside forces and his own private demons. Before the dust settles, Wolverine will have to come to terms with his deepest fears and draw on his inner reserve of strength. The film's PG-13 rating is due to intense sci-fi action and violence, as well as mature content and language.

Continuing Films

"The Conjuring" earned $22,130,000 during the weekend, bringing its total to more than $83 million. Carolyn and Roger Perron only want to create a good life for their five young daughters. However, the home they move into proves to be anything but welcoming. Tormented by unseen forces and fearing for their lives, the Perrons call on a couple of paranormal investigators to save them. "The Conjuring" has an R rating for disturbing violence and terror.

"Despicable Me 2" saw profits of $16 million. Overall, the animated film has brought in more than $306 million. When the Anti-Villain League tries to recruit Gru to help them track down a dangerous threat, the reformed bad guy originally refuses. He doesn't want to risk disrupting the happy home life he's created for Margo, Agnes, and Edith, his adopted daughters. But the AVL proves to be very persuasive. The movie's PG rating is due to rude humor and mild action.

"Turbo" brought in $13,325,000, bringing the total profits to more than $55 million. Turbo may just be a tiny garden snail, but he has big ambitions. His hero is an Indy 500 racer, but the other snails cannot understand Turbo's desire for a more fast-paced lifestyle. It will take a wish gone wrong and a freak accident to give Turbo the speed he craves. The movie has a PG rating for mild action and some thematic elements.

"Grown Ups 2" earned $11,500,000 during the weekend of July 26, with overall earnings now reaching over $101 million. When Lenny moves his family back to the small town where he grew up, he learns the hard way that he can never truly go home again. Lenny has forgotten that small towns have plenty of their own problems, from territorial younger guys to unsavory cops and bus drivers. The PG-13 rating is because of crude, suggestive content, nudity, and language.

"Red 2" has earned over $35 million during its two weeks in theaters. This past weekend, the film saw profits of $9,400,000. When Marvin approaches Frank about a serious problem, Frank prefers to continue leading a more relaxing life with his girlfriend, Sarah. But it soon becomes clear that Frank will have to take part in a scheme, whether he likes it or not. After all, world peace hangs squarely in the balance. "Red 2" has a PG-13 rating for pervasive action and violence, frenetic gunplay, language, and drug material.

"Pacific Rim" made $7,540,000, bringing total profits up to $84,026,104. Once, Raleigh was a top Jaeger pilot, fearlessly taking down the monsters that have attacked humankind. A disaster brought Raleigh's piloting career to an end. Now, however, the Jaeger commander is asking Raleigh to return and put an end to humanity's vicious battle for once and for all. The PG-13 rating is due to brief language and intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence.

Movies to DVD

"G,I. Joe: Retaliation" arrives out on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, July 30. With Cobra Commander slowly taking control of the United States government, the G.I. Joe team is the only force that can restore peace. Unfortunately, Cobra has thought of everything, and the G.I. Joe team has to struggle to clear their good names before they can fight back. The PG-13 rating is due to intense sequences of martial arts action and combat violence, as well as to language and sensuality.

"Black Rock" focuses on a group of female friends who head out to spend some time at a secluded location. Though they want to heal their own relationships, the three women run into trouble when they find that they are not alone on the island. What follows is a desperate fight for survival. "Black Rock" has an R rating for strong violence, pervasive language, mature references, and brief graphic nudity.

In "Between Us," two couples inadvertently reveal their most private beliefs during a conversation. As they struggle to deal with the consequences of baring their souls in front of each other, the friends find themselves questioning their life views and their relationships. They soon realize their lives will never be the same. "Between Us" has an R rating for language, including mature references.
