Zac Efron is set to play a police informant in 'Narc'.

The 'Paperboy' actor is attached to star in the forthcoming true crime drama as an all-American college student who is forced to go undercover to save himself.

The student - who is president of his fraternity and captain of the lacrosse team - gets caught by police with cocaine he plans to distribute at a party, but is offered a deal in which he can escape arrest by becoming an informant.

He then establishes a secret double life, wearing wiretaps and eventually putting away big-time criminals.

Garrett Meyer has penned the script for the film, which is based on a real life story found by producer Doug Banker.

The film doesn't have a director yet.

News of his attachment to 'Narc' comes just days after Efron was announced to be starring in action thriller 'Autobahn' alongside Amber Heard.

The film centres on an American backpacker in Germany who is hired to be a getaway driver for a gang of drug smugglers but when a job goes wrong, he decides to go on the run to escape his mobster employers, who hotly pursue him.

He is currently filming the comedy 'Townies' with Seth Rogen and 'Bridesmaids' actress Rose Byrne, while he will next be seen in romantic comedy 'Are We Officially Dating?' and John F. Kennedy assassination drama 'Parkland'.
