Zach Galifianakis joins A Confederacy of Dunces

Zach Galifianakis is set to star in 'A Confederacy of Dunces'.

The 'Hangover' actor looks set to be joined by 'The Muppets' director James Bobin in the movie adaptation of John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.

Zach will portray Ignatius J Reilly, an eccentric 30-something who still lives with his mother but sets out to making something of his life and aims to find a job in New Orleans' French Quarter, Vulture reports.

'Cedar Rapids' writer Phil Johnston is penning the script for the motion picture, which will be produced by Scott Rudin.

Zach's 'The Campaign' co-star Will Ferrell previously set out to make a movie based on the novel - which was published in 1980, more than one decade after the author's suicide - with a script co-written by Steven Soderbergh, but the film was never made.

When asked what happened with the project, Will said: ''It's a mystery. For some reason that's a very scary project for people to take on.''

It's not the first failed attempt at adapting the book into a film after Harold Ramis tried to create a motion picture out of the novel in 1982 but it was shelved after John Belushi, who was in line to play Ingatius, died.

The role was passed onto John Candy and Chris Farley over the years, but both passed away in 1994 and 1997 respectively.
